Hire me as an editor

I’m a communications and editing professional with over 20 years’ experience in writing, editing, publishing, teaching and research. My special interests include storytelling, content management systems and automated publishing software, design and development of editorial standards, production management and planning.

Over the past 10 years I have worked extensively as an editor in a variety of contexts including development assistance (SNV Netherlands), political party support (NIMD), nuclear disarmament and international security (SIPRI) and intergovernmental democracy support (International IDEA).

During this time I have honed my editorial and production skills, working in fast-paced research environments where attention to detail and accuracy are paramount.

I have produced complex research reports according to strict editorial guidelines, including Oxford University Press style. At International IDEA I was responsible for greatly expanding and improving the Institute’s own Editorial Standards, and for communicating these standards to authors spread across multiple working environments.

My knowledge and experience of contemporary publishing and production practices has been greatly enhanced by my time spent at SIPRI and International IDEA, in particular.

At SIPRI I was responsible for every stage of the production process, from internal and external peer review of manuscripts, developmental and copy-editing, design and layout, printing, and dissemination via the Institute’s website.

In my role as a Communications Editor I also promoted our publications via social media, press releases and launches.

At International IDEA I managed external providers for editing and proofreading services, design and layout, translation, printing and distribution.

I also performed extensive editorial quality control and rewrite reports where necessary, and administered the Institute’s in-house publication vetting system, which involved acting as the Secretariat for a knowledge product review committee.

In terms of specific technologies, at International IDEA I introduced a single-source publishing system (Booktype) for the layout of publications which enabled International IDEA to automate many traditional design functions, greatly reducing both costs and errors.

Contact me if you would like to discuss how I can help you or your organization improve the quality and readability of your written communications.
