Well, my experiment in looking back to the future lasted just two months. The problem was simple: Anders Norén’s Hoffman WordPress theme is now too old to function properly in the WP ecosystem. A bit like me, perhaps.
Therefore, I’ve opted for simplicity and modernity this time, going for Norén’s Pulitzer theme. It’s suitably minimalist and pretty easy to install. The theme is also made for the WP block editor, which I’ve finally come around to using.
I had been noticing that the Hoffman theme was making my site very slow, and leading to lots of JSON errors when trying to save or publish new posts. Which kind of defeated the purpose (time-saving) of installing it in the first place.
Now that I’ve moved the focus of my blogging to Substack, the Pulitzer theme offers a more synced and consistent reading experience for subscribers when I direct them to pages or posts on this site.
As always, there are some kinks and bugs that I need to iron out (e.g. the mobile hamburger menu does not seem to be working at the moment, and date-based archives are not easy to locate) but hopefully these will not become a time suck.
Then again, they probably will.
