I first visited Hiroshima in 2004, at which time I wrote a poem about the true story of the tram that stayed in operation after the atomic bomb dropped. Ever since, I’ve felt a fondness for the city based on its tram network, which is serviced by a wide range of both old and new trams from various other cities in Japan and elsewhere. It wasn’t until I returned this time that I discovered the zero trams (i.e. the trams with no route that return to the tram depot in the centre of the city).
