Tatami house

A view of a traditional tatami house in Hiroshima

We stayed in a number of tatami houses in Japan (I am not sure ‘tatami house’ is the right word but I mean a house with a tatami-mat floor). This one, in Hiroshima, was probably the one with the lowest ceilings. It’s no exaggeration to state that I cracked my skull on at least five different surfaces while staying here. But there was also something really comfortable about the house, especially when it was pouring outside and we sat on the floor listening to the rain on the roof.
