OMG I heart Darryl and his posse of minor superstar hip-hoppers on this echt leuk song “Eeyeeyo” and yo in case you didn’t get it the first time it’s all about respect.
For all our Dutch speakers, here’s another version with text, kind of like a teletext/karaoke crossover. To summarise, here’s the chorus, try to keep up:
ik kan wel liegen
maar verliezen is geen optie;
dus denk maar niet dat jij
mij straks kapot ziet;
we zeggen eeyeeyo enne eeyeeyo:
eeyeey!
At which point superlief Soulia jumps in and repeats the chorus before kickboxing her way through the coda. Also on this track you’ll hear Ali B whom I don’t have so much time for as Darryl, and Ryan Babel aka RIO, an Ajax footballer. Not sure what he’s doing here but as I hope you can see clearly, Daryl’s is a very inclusive universe and that’s why I like him and that’s also why I’m using his song lyrics to learn Dutch. Plus the bassline in the chorus just fricking KILLS ME.
Now let’s translate that chorus. First things first: eeyo is clearly not a real word, nor is ‘eeyeey’ or, indeed, ‘eeyeeyo’. Maybe in Morocco it means something but for now let’s just assume it carries the same rhetorical force as the Fonzie ‘eeey’. Okay.
I am cool, and so I will not/ cannot stop;
ik kan wel liegen
I am quite capable of lying
maar verliezen is geen optie;
but losing is not an option for me;
dus denk maar niet dat jij
therefore don’t go thinking that you
mij straks kapot ziet;
will ever see me broken down –
we zeggen eeyeeyo enne eeyeeyo:
we say ‘yes i/we is/are teh cool;’ (repeat)
eeyeey!
cool, eh?
One day soon I’ll get through the lyrics to the whole song but that should do for now.
Kfx Darryl!
