Wild scenes reminiscent of the Beatles’ tour of Australia confronted the rapidly icon-becoming Davey Dreamnation when he touched down at Darwin International Airport last Saturday.

The handsome singer was whisked through security checks and bundled into a waiting armoured personnel carrier, before expressing his amazement at the welcome through his interpreter.

“Davey is amazed,” confirmed the interpreter in his now-familiar Esperanto-creole. “He just can’t believe that not only did huge crowds of people turn up, but also that there were so many people on the plane with him as he made his epic journey to the Top End. He is simply stunned.”

Local reporters confirmed last nigth that Dreamnation’s concerts have all sold out, including what some have described as a “simply astonishing” imporomptu performance at a phone booth outside the Darwin GPO.

“Yeah, we haven’t seen anything like this since the Screaming Jets toured up here five years ago,” said one bystander at the chaotic free gig. “And the Abbatoir kicked too, they are the tightest backing band in the country right now, without a doubt.”

Meanwhile, reactions to Davey’s controversial outing of fellow-musos last week have been dull, as expected. Only Howard Jones, Chris de Burgh and Jim Kerr of Simple MInds have made official responses to the allegations, with Elton John and others choosing instead to express their disappointment through one-to-one satellite phone interviews.

“Well, we couldn’t give a flying fox,” was all Davey’s interpreter had to say in response.
